It is tempting to suggest political reasons for dissatisfaction with local life currently despite the arrival of the tram and the plans for HS2. Could it be the result of the Tory administration’s paring back council services, failing to build houses and selling off assets?
Broxtowe is currently recording the lowest score for ‘life satisfaction’ across all local authority areas in the UK, according to the latest official annual survey of personal well-being[1]. At 7.1, Broxtowe’s score compares badly with neighbours Nottingham at 7.4, Erewash (7.8) and Rushcliffe (8.0). Only two years ago, however, Broxtowe had the highest score in the region at 8.2, indicating a big recent decline not seen elsewhere.
Similar patterns were also shown for measures labelled ‘Worthwhile’ and ‘Happiness’, suggesting a general malaise in the borough.
